Why would I need a breast reconstruction?

Breast reconstruction is performed to recreate an absent or deformed breast resulting from surgery for breast cancer or trauma. It can be performed at the same time as removal of the breast (immediate reconstruction) or years later (delayed reconstruction). Fortunately, when a patient has immediate reconstruction, she is spared the emotional and psychological distress of seeing herself with significant asymmetry and no breast at all.

What can you tell me about the surgical options?

New medical techniques and devices have made it possible to recreate a breast that closely resembles the shape and appearance of the opposite natural breast. The surgical options will depend on a number of factors which include: the size and shape of the opposite breast, the desire to use your own tissue (autogenous) versus tissue expansion with an implant, your body habitus, the availability of your own tissue, and any preexisting medical conditions. Dr. Awada will be glad to review all of the options in depth in addition to the associated risks and benefits of each. After examining you and understanding your likes and dislikes, she will be able to take all of the above into account and assist you in determining the option that is best for you.

What are the surgical descriptions?

The additional length of the procedure and recovery time will vary depending on the type of reconstruction that will be performed. In general, use of your own tissue (either from the abdomen or the muscle from the back) will take longer than placement of tissue expanders. If only a tissue expander is placed, an additional hour is required and you are usually able to go home in 1-2 days. However, you will require repeated expansion in the office and a second surgery to exchange the temporary tissue expander for a permanent implant. If the muscle from your back is used (with or without a tissue expander), an additional 2 hours is required and you should expect a 2-3 day stay in the hospital. If the tissue from your abdomen is used an additional 3-4 hours is required and your stay in the hospital will approximate 3 days. You will be informed thoroughly about the specific risks, pros and cons, and recovery of the procedure that will be used to reconstruct your breast.
